In honor of Dr. Karol Bruzik's retirement and his devoted years to students at the UIC College of Pharmacy, it's fitting to pay tribute to Pharmacy's most infamous villain yet greatest hero. As student pharmacists aspiring to educate future healthcare professionals and patients about medications, we ponder: what lies at the essence of these medications? They are molecules, with three-dimensional shapes, composed of atoms found in everyday items. Yet, mankind has crafted molecules that prevent diseases, cure illnesses, and alleviate suffering.
While I connect with others through words, molecules connect through bonds; where I have relationships, they have salt bridges. The moral here is that you can relate to molecules more than you think. They experience complex relationships, similar to our own. You feel emotions and call it love; they have chemistry and call it attraction. Whether you're studying medication side effects, observing pharmacokinetic curves, or feeling your morning caffeine kick in, remember: Medicinal Chemistry is the force behind it all.
